A Sweet Taste of Elbasan, Heritage, and Home

There are some recipes that are not just made…
they are felt.
Ballokume is one of them.
This beautiful, golden Albanian cookie—soft, crumbly, and rich with butter—is more than just a dessert. It is a symbol of tradition, of celebration, and of a time when everything was made slowly, by hand, and with love.
If you are Albanian, you already know…
Ballokume belongs to Dita e Verës—a day of renewal, joy, and the welcoming of spring. But in truth, these cookies belong anywhere there is family, warmth, and a table ready to be shared.
Here, in Cook With Besa, I welcome you the way we always have:
Bukë, kripë e zemër.
💛 A Memory from My Kitchen
Growing up, recipes like this were never written down.
They lived in the hands of our mothers.
My Mami—Mami me duar të arta (Mami with the golden hands)—could create something extraordinary out of the simplest ingredients. Even in times when we had little, especially during the years in Kosovo before the war, she found a way to bring sweetness to our table.
Ballokume was one of those gifts.
Today, every time I make them, I am not just baking…
I am remembering.
I am reconnecting.
I am continuing her legacy.

It is not meant to be perfect.
It is meant to be real.
❤️ A Tradition Worth Keeping
In a world that moves fast, recipes like this remind us to slow down.
To measure less.
To feel more.
To cook not just with ingredients… but with memory.
This is why I created AlbanianMom.com
This is why I continue to write, to cook, to share.
Because our traditions deserve to live on—
not just in our hearts,
but in our kitchens,
and for generations to come.
✨ Final Thoughts
When you make these, don’t rush.
Take your time.
Play music.
Think of your mother, your grandmother, your roots.
And when they are done—
share them.
Because that is who we are.
